The farewell hall

We can help arrange a family-requested private post-mortem examination. The first step is to discuss the question you want answered and ask the examining doctor whether an examination may be useful.

Check what has already been arranged

Tell us whether the hospital or prosecutor has planned or carried out an examination, and which institution currently has responsibility for your relative. A private request does not replace an official investigation or its requirements.

The provider needs to establish whether a private examination can proceed, who may authorise it and which documents are required. If you are abroad, ask about the accepted signature and document format before sending originals.

Prepare the question and agree the report

  • Write down the particular concern you want the doctor to consider.
  • Identify any available medical records and previous findings.
  • Ask what the examination and any additional tests would cover.
  • Agree what written report will be provided and who will explain it.
  • Confirm the fee, possible additional costs and expected reporting stages.

An examination may not resolve every question. If you need a report for an insurer, legal matter or another doctor, check their requirements as well as the examination provider's proposed scope.

Coordinate the funeral arrangements

Raise the request before preparation and funeral dates are finalised. Additional tests, permissions or release arrangements may affect the timetable, so ask which dates can be confirmed.

If you would like a viewing afterwards, discuss its suitability with the people responsible for care. No particular appearance or unchanged funeral date should be assumed.
